Take An Art Break

The Gifts We Carry

This Art Break Idea was inspired by our Take an Art Break Podcast Episode with Holly Woods, PhD

What if our lives are like rivers?

We receive gifts from those who came before us, some visible, some invisible. A grandmother’s resilience. A father’s sense of humor. A teacher’s encouragement. A friend’s kindness. A moment of courage. A love of art. A way of seeing beauty in the world. These gifts flow through us, shaping who we are and who we become.

This Art Break Idea is an invitation to pause and reflect on the gifts you have received and the gifts you wish to pass forward.

Take a Breath

Place your hand on your heart.

Think of someone who has touched your life in a meaningful way.

Ask yourself: What gift did I receive from them?

Then ask: What gift do I want to leave behind?

Create

Using words, colors, symbols, collage, or images, create a piece of art that reflects the gifts you carry and the gifts you hope to share. There is no right way. Simply begin and trust what wants to emerge.

Share

If it feels right, show your art to the person that inspired it.

Reflect

We are all part of a living tapestry. The kindness we offer, the art we create, the love we share, and the courage we embody ripple outward in ways we may never fully know. Every day, we are receiving gifts from life. Every day, we have can be someone else’s gift.
