Take An Art Break

How have you been feeling lately?

Hey friends,

How have you been feeling lately?

Not to get into any details, but personally, my emotions have felt especially raw lately. Navigating the highs and lows of it all has inspired this Art Break.

Let’s take your big and little emotions—the joyful, the sticky, the stormy, and everything in between—and channel them into something meaningful. Art can be a powerful mirror, reflecting your inner world. Art can help you see yourself with clarity and compassion. Check out our podcast episode (here) that dives deeply into this topic.

Collaging is an easy to approach art form that, when done with  intention, can be a mirror of your soul. Just like all art making, it allows you to process emotions that words can’t always capture, offering clarity and, sometimes, a release. Through the act of creation, you transform your feelings into art—and in doing so, you transform yourself.

As always, there is no experience required; just try to bring your authentic self. So, grab your materials and start collaging! Let your feelings guide you to something extraordinary, and let art remind you of your strength and your beauty within.

Art is your ultimate superpower for self-expression and self-care—and it’s incredibly fun, too!

Collage Your Feelings

Art Break Supplies:

  • Magazines, newspapers, or printed materials you can cut or tear
  • Scissors (or just tear by hand—it’s incredibly cathartic!)
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Sturdy paper or cardboard (any size that feels right for you)
  • Markers, pens, or paint for extra details

Art Break Directions:

  1. Set the Vibe. Find your creative safe zone. Maybe it’s a quiet corner with soft lighting, or perhaps it’s a vibrant space with your favorite music blasting. Choose what feels good—this moment is about you.
  2. Tune Into Your Emotions. Take a deep breath in…and out. Ask yourself, “What’s swirling inside me right now?” You don’t have to label anything or try to fix it. Just notice the feelings and let them come as they are.
  3. Hunt for Inspiration. Flip through those magazines. Tear, cut, or pull anything that calls to you: a bold word, a vibrant color, an image that tugs at your heart. Let your intuition guide you—remember there are no wrong choices here.
  4. Create Your Collage. Glue your clippings on your paper or board. Experiment with placement, layering, and overlapping. Add doodles, words, or scribbles if you feel like it. Let your instincts lead—this is a space for expression, not perfection.
  5. Be Curious and Embrace the Flow. Let your hands and heart take the lead. It’s a visual representation of your inner world, and that makes it powerful.
  6. After Your Art Magic. Embrace your process and allow room for reflection. Step back and observe your creation. What stands out to you? Are there feelings, themes, or stories woven into the collage? Jot down your thoughts or simply sit with the piece for a moment. I find it helpful to light a candle to my art and stare at it and see what it has to tell me.
  7. We Would Love to See You. If you feel called to share, show your collage to a trusted friend, post it online, or keep it as a private reminder of your emotional journey. If you’re sharing, tag it with #TakeAnArtBreak so we can celebrate your bravery and creativity together.
