Walk in Their Shoes

Take An Art Break for Empathy
“Art is not a mirror to reflect the world, but a hammer with which to shape it.” — Bertolt Brecht
Empathy is a bridge that can connect us. It allows us to see, hear, and feel beyond our own experiences—to step into another person’s reality and understand their emotions, struggles, and joys. Empathy is more than just understanding—it’s a superpower that can transform the way we connect with others. Art has the power to cultivate empathy, breaking down walls and bringing us closer together.

Research shows that our collective empathy is declining—but there’s hope! Empathy is a skill we can build, and Psychology Professor Jamil Zaki shares how here.
Take an Art Break for Empathy
Let’s use creativity to expand our hearts and minds.
Art Break Supplies:
The materials needed for this art break are anything and everything. You can use paper and pen, paint on a canvas, collage old photographs, or create something digitally. Whatever medium speaks to you today, use it. And, if you can’t decide, use pen and paper.
Art Break Directions:
REFLECT – Think of someone whose experience differs greatly from yours—someone you struggle to relate to or understand. Consider their world and ask yourself the following questions:
- What emotions do they carry?
- What challenges do they face?
- What brings them joy?
WRITE – Create a short story or a journal entry from their perspective.
CREATE – Express their story through color, symbols, and abstract forms on paper, canvas, sand, the computer, photography, whatever. Feel free to include words, create a visual poem, or make a collage that reflects their reality.
SOAK IT IN – Take a moment to sit with what you’ve created.
- What did you learn about this person or group?
- How did it feel to step into their world?
SHARE – Share your creation with #TakeAnArtBreak and start a conversation about empathy, understanding, and connection.
Why This Matters:
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view… until you walk in their shoes.” — Harper Lee
Empathy isn’t just a feeling—it’s a skill we can nurture. When we engage in creative expression, we open ourselves to new perspectives and deepen our compassion for others. Through art, we can break down walls, build bridges, and create a world where every story is seen, honored, and heard.
