Take an Art Break
What is an Art Break? An intentional act of creativity.
Let’s Elaborate:
Think of a coffee break, but instead of stopping for a cup of joe to give yourself a rest from your daily routine, imagine if you picked up a pencil and sketched for a few minutes.
Or, what if you got that cup of coffee, sat down at the cafe and looked at the art hanging on the walls for a few minutes.
Or, why not take that coffee for a walk around the block and look around and intentionally notice the shapes, colors, lines and forms surrounding you.
There are so many ways to make art a part of your daily life. Art is Moving is here to encourage you and show you just how easy it is to Take an Art Break today!
How to Take Your FIRST Art Break
We know what you’re thinking. Ok, maybe not exactly what you’re thinking, we’re artists, not psychics. But, perhaps your hesitating and thinking something along the lines of “I’m not an artist.” Or how about “I can’t draw.” or “I don’t know how to paint.” Or, “I don’t even know where to start.” Or, “I don’t have the supplies to take an art break.”
Here’s our answers to all of that.
- Yes, you are. Everyone is an artist.
- No worries. This is a no-judgement zone. We’re not interested in how talented you are. We like to say, “It’s about the process, not the product.”
- See the answer to 2.

- We have plenty of art break ideas that do not require art supplies. WHAT?! Now we’re really talking crazy over here. But, it’s true.
OK, Are you ready to take your first art break?
Here goes!
Step one: Take a look around.
Step two: Count how many different colors you see in the next 60 seconds.
Step three: Is there a color that stands out more than another color? Why do you think that is? Is there a color you notice is missing? Why do you think that color isn’t present?
Step four: Close your eyes for 30 seconds. Take some deep breaths. Try not to giggle. Ok, giggle if you have to. I always do.
Step five: Open your eyes.
Step six: Take a look around.
Step seven: Did you notice more color this time?
Step eight: How do you feel?
Step nine: Are you having fun yet?
Step ten: High five yourself. You just took your first art break.
